School CouncilSchool Councils have been set up in all government schools in Victoria. School Councillors are elected for a 2 year period. At The Lakes there are 15 members of School Council - the Principal (executive officer), 3 members of staff and 11 parent representatives. Our School Council meetings are relaxed, with plenty of laughter whilst we make decisions to improve the education and care of the 900 students, 95 staff and over 1000 parents who make up our school community. Within statewide guidelines School Council:
Meetings are held on Tuesday 7.00 to 9.30pm approximately 8 times per year. Minutes can be downloaded from the links on the left hand side of this page or by clicking here. The School Council codes of practice can be found by clicking here. Classroom HelpersVolunteers to help in classrooms are actively encouraged. Volunteers provide extra support for students under the supervision of the classroom teacher. In term 1 each year, the year level coordinators will request classroom helper volunteers and arrangements are confirmed with individual teachers. Classroom helpers must complete the 4 sessions of training to undertake this role. VolunteersThe Lakes South Morang School actively seeks volunteers to provide assistance in the many programs operating at the school. Volunteers come from many diverse areas such as parents, grandparents, the unemployed, the City of Whittlesea volunteer register, secondary and tertiary students, parents of ex students and friends of The Lakes School. All people who volunteer to assist at The Lakes School have to undertake a staff briefing of 45 minute training session. This is to ensure clarity of expectations and our duty of care for students. The 45 minute training session covers areas such as Privacy legislation, Occupational Health and Safety, The Equal Opportunity Act and How to obtain a Working with Children Card. Specific assistance and training is provided by staff to suit the expectations of the various volunteer roles. Click here to see the volunteers policy. Camp VolunteersIn addition to completing the half hour Volunteer Training, volunteers who have been selected by the school to attend camp, participate in a more detailed briefing of their roles and responsibilities. Camping ProgramThe Lakes South Morang School has a comprehensive camping program. It is structured to assist students to develop levels of independence appropriate for their age group and to experience a range of educational activities. The camping program is an opportunity for children to experience food and accommodation in a caring environment away from their families. What went to school council in December
